2. Repolarisering

Under hjärtats aktionspotential öppnas kaliumkanaler, vilket gör att K+-joner strömmar ut ur cellerna. Detta utflöde repolariserar cellmembranet och återställer det to its resting state after depolarisation. Repolarisation is essential to terminate the action potential so that the heart can prepare for the next contraction.

3. Hjärtats automatism

Sinusknutan, which initiates each heartbeat, relies on the interplay of several ions – including potassium – to generate electrical impulses. Potassium channels regulate the rate of spontaneous depolarisation of the sinus node cells, which affects heart rate and ensures a regular sinus rhythm.

4. Impulse conduction

Potassium ions also influence how electrical impulses are conducted through the heart. Adequate potassium levels ensure that signals from the sinus node travel smoothly and efficiently through the AV node (atrioventricular node) and further along the conduction pathways to the ventricles. This coordinates the contraction of the heart chambers in the correct order.

5. Risk of arrhythmias at abnormal potassium levels

Abnormal potassium levels can disrupt the delicate ion balance in the heart and lead to arrhythmias, i.e., irregular heart rhythms:

  • Hypokalaemia (low potassium levels): prolongs the duration of the action potential and increases the risk of re-entry arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia.
  • Hyperkalaemia (high potassium levels): slows impulse conduction and impairs the heart's electrical activity, which can cause bradycardia or, in severe cases, cardiac arrest.

Maintaining adequate potassium levels

To preserve a stable sinus rhythm, it is essential that potassium levels remain within the normal range. This can be promoted through a varied diet rich in potassium-containing foods such as bananas, potatoes, spinach, avocado, and legumes. People taking medications that affect potassium levels – such as diuretics or certain blood pressure medications – should monitor their values regularly in consultation with a physician.

In summary: adequate potassium levels within the normal range are crucial for the proper functioning of the heart's electrical system and for maintaining a regular sinus rhythm throughout life.
